Goodnews River Lodge
Goodnews River Lodge Alaska Fly FishingIf you're looking for unparalleled fishing action for chrome bright Kings and Chums, Silvers that just love to eat poppers, or Rainbows and Dollies in endless miles of river, creeks and braids in a pristine Alaskan wilderness setting, you owe it to yourself to fish the Goodnews......

Welcome to the Goodnews River Lodge, the finest river side permanent camp made for the adventurous angler. In business for over 30 years, The Goodnews River Lodge is the only fishing lodge on the Goodnews River with the ability to fish all the productive water from the tidal flats to the upper river.

The camp itself is located just about where the upstream tidal influence ends, meaning the salmon will be fresh from the ocean and eager to take the fly. Geographically located 475 miles from Anchorage, on the edge of the pristine Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, you will find outstanding fishing for all 5 species of Salmon, as well as Leopard Rainbows, Grayling and sea-run Dolly Varden.

Fishing

Goodnews River Lodge Alaska Fly FishingFishing is done both by wading and by utilizing one of the many power boats to gain access to both the tidal flats and also the rainbow laden area upstream from the braided area that is formed by the joining together of the 3 branches of the river. Each evening guests will decide what type and location of fishing they choose for the next day from silver salmon to rainbow trout. Your fishing day will start at 8:30 and normally go to 5:00 Pm with the exception for the angler who wants to fish late into the evening. Weeks run Wednesday to Wednesday from June 16-23 thru September 1-8.
At the end of your week, we seal your fish in waxed, lock boxes for you to take home and share with family and friends.

Early in the season anglers will have the opportunity to fish for the ultimate chromers, the king salmon. At the same time as the kings run you’ll find chums and sockeye followed in succession by the aerial acrobatics of the silvers in mid July. These world famous fish will take streamers and top water flies with reckless abandon and satisfy the angler with 30 to 50 takes per day.

Rainbow trout are a main staple of the Goodnews River.  They are present year round and will take a well placed streamer, flesh fly, bead or later in the season, a floating mouse pattern. There is nothing more exciting than a ferocious rainbow engulfing a mouse pattern to set the anglers heart toward cardiac arrest. These rainbows, averaging 18 to 26 inches, are on the way to spawning and along the way lie behind the migrating salmon as they deposit their eggs. A well placed egg pattern will give the angler 20 to 40 “bows’ to the net daily with runs and jumps that only the leopard rainbow can provide. For the angler who doesn’t need the comfortable amenities of a traditional lodge, Goodnews River Lodge is the perfect introduction to the real fishing Alaska offers.

Accommodations

Goodnews River Lodge Alaska Fly Fishing

This is a river camp with guests staying in well-appointed tents erected on wooden platforms, and enjoy the benefits of camp-wide boardwalks, propane heaters, great food and guides, and fishing literally out the front door. Each tent has a metal door with a window in the front, and a frame window in the rear, allowing for cross ventilation. Each tent is supplied with a propane heater, and a propane lamp should any guest wish for light after the generator is turned off at 10:30pm. (It comes on at 5:00am so there is full power to all tents in the morning). The common area consists of a dining tent, which also houses a sitting area, fly tying bench, and a shop for souvenirs. Next to it is the bath facility, with 6 complete baths, each with a shower, water heater, and a chemical toilet. This facility connects to a heated drying tent for guest’s and guide’s waders, jackets, etc, and is kept warm all night so all clothes are dry for the next day's fishing.

A full breakfast buffet starts the day at 7:00am. Dinners are a choice of 3 entrees and a fish dish every day. Lunches are a sandwich board with many choices, and there is always hot soup available for anyone who wants to come in for lunch. Shore lunches are provided upon request
