Copper River Lodge
The Copper River is a classic trout stream packed with long dry fly glides, deep winding pools studded with boulders, faster riffles, and deep undercut banks just begging for a mouse fly......The Copper River is one of the premier wild rainbow rivers in Alaska and is designated by the state as a trophy rainbow river, therefore only allowing fly fishing and strict catch and release ethics. These designations have kept the fishing outstanding over the years and for the future.
The Fishing
By being a tributary of Lake Iliamna, the Copper receives an abundance of sockeye salmon which are the lifeblood of the local ecosystem. The sockeyes are the fuel for the wildlife, namely the bears, but more importantly for the fly angler and the incredible Rainbow Trout population. One can find rainbows throughout the fishing season even before the salmon enter the river. During this early season you can expect to catch fish on streamers, nymphs, and dries! Once the salmon enter the river and begin their spawning ritual the food source for the rainbows becomes pretty much eggs and flesh. An Alaskan rainbow never forgets how to eat a sculpin or a mouse but from August on the main item on the menu is eggs so expect using multiple egg patterns and catching lots of fish! The Copper River Rainbows are some of the largest in Alaska, and are the reason the Copper was the first river in the state designated a fly fishing, catch and release only, trophy rainbow river. It is this designation that has kept the fishing so spectacular.
Unlike other tundra rivers in Alaska that offer large trout, the Copper runs through a scenic river valley lined with groves of cottonwood, spruce, and birch. Aside from helping make it one of the most gorgeous rivers in the state, these trees offer the fly fishermen refuge from the relentless northern winds.
Probably one of the nicest surprises for anglers visiting the Copper is the river's size and wade ability. Fishermen of any age or skill that desire the solitude of the river rather than the tutelage of the guide can comfortably and successfully fish on their own.
We understand that flexibility is the key to any vacation. If you want to sleep in and fish a little later, or see another stretch of river, your yearnings will never be far from reality.
The level of experience of the guide service is very extensive with many of the guides coming from destinations as far away as Mongolia, South American, Russia, and of course, throughout Alaska. Their experience insures you’ll receive the finest instruction and river knowledge available. Whether you are interested in learning to double haul, or in presenting a dry fly in a tricky lie, they will always be qualified and ready to help.
