Although there are not many family options in Alaska, Brooks Lodge provides world class fishing and plenty of non-fishing options........
The Brooks River has gained a worldwide reputation that attracts visitors from across the globe to enjoy the incredible bear populations that inhabit the area. At times there as many 50 bears that use the mile and half river near Brooks Lodge. The National Park Service has built extensive viewing platforms along the banks to provide separation and safety while enjoying the bears.
- World famous bear viewing area
- Good option for those who wish to do it on their own
- Fly-out program available so you can fish other pristine rivers
- Family orientated
The park service provides bear safety and education classes and provides tours of the adjacent Valley of the 10,000 Smokes. Located just 22 miles away, this area is the sight of one of the most violent eruptions in modern history from Novarupta volcano. The volcano exploded in 1912 with blasts of hot winds and gas which spewed super hot glowing pumice and ash over 40 square miles. This explosion killed everything living and deposited ash up to 700 feet deep. Signs of this geological event are evident today and visitors will find the event well displayed.
The Fishing
The river is right out in front of the lodge area and can be accessed on foot only. Of course there are guides available that can handle all of your needs while fishing, but can also be just directors of the river. Since the river is short in length it does not take much for an angler to learn where and what to do to get the fish. The guides are very professional and can be great sources of information, but one can also fish on their own at Brooks and experience a great day.
There are fly-out options and boat options right out of the lodge since the Brooks Lodge is its sister lodge Kulik Lodge. You can fly to any river you want to. Also, the lodge has boats that can access all the rivers and streams that flow into Naknek Lake or Brooks Lake which will allow you to see different, productive, and uncrowded streams.
The Brooks River is another one of those rivers that is short and nestled between two large lakes providing superior sockeye spawning habitat. This spawning will bring the rainbow trout populations out of the lakes and into the river to feed on the high protein content of eggs and flesh. The river is also very clear and not so big that one can expect a lot of sight fishing for the large trout while wading.
