The Fishing
The Kvichak is a large, clear river located approximately 250 miles southwest of Anchorage and is the only connection between Lake Iliamna and Bristol Bay. The significance of this is that all of the millions of salmon that return each year to the Lake Iliamna drainage must pass in front of Alaska Sportsman’s Lodge which makes for some unbelievable fishing opportunities right out your front door. During June, shortly after the ice goes out of Lake Iliamna and the river, the sport fishing season in the Bristol Bay area begins. Whether you choose to fly-out or near the lodge, there is a river and species of fish that will make any day one to remember at Alaska Sportsman’s Lodge.
The first part of June is excellent for exciting Rainbow Trout, Arctic Grayling, and Northern Pike. The average Rainbow during this time is between 22 and 26 inches. Dry fly fishing is excellent. The King salmon begin to arrive in their native rivers about June and average between 25 and 30 pounds. To really target the Kings you must fly from Alaska Sportsman’s Lodge a short distance to one of three different rivers.
During the end of June and through July, the Kvichak becomes the passageway for sockeye salmon to instinctively return to their spawning beds throughout the Iliamna drainage. Millions of sockeye pass right in front of The Alaska Sportsman’s Lodge each summer. At the peak of the run, there are approximately 30,000 fish per hour passing in front of the lodge. These fish are fresh in from the ocean, chrome silver and put up a spectacular fight once hooked.
Next to arrive on the Kvichak are the silver, chum, and pink salmon and these fish show up during the beginning of August. The Silver salmon fishing is very exciting and many anglers prefer silvers to all other salmon because of their hard strikes and many long runs with spectacular tail dances along with occasionally devouring top water flies. Chum and pink salmon are two great species on a fly rod and should not be mistakenly overlooked by any angler – both species readily take a fly, fight well and most importantly are great for beginning fly rodders.
Beginning in August and going through October, the rainbow Trout return to the Kvichak to stock up for the long cold winter. This is the Trophy time of the season on the river where anglers target an abundance of 28 – 30 inch and larger rainbows. These prized fish will quicken your pulse as they make run after run as you try to land one. They are pound for pound the best fighting sport fish in the world.
