Since you will be located right in the middle of great fishing, your time on the water is maximized. The clear water of the Naknek River begins its 35 mile journey to Bristol Bay from within the massive Katmai National Park and Preserve and hosts all five species of Pacific salmon along with enormous rainbow Trout.  Sitting about 14 miles downstream from Naknek Lake at the confluence of the King Salmon Creek is the Alaska Sportsman’s Bear Trail Lodge.  Since the salmon are coming just a short 20 miles from the ocean and are dime bright, they are extremely fresh and very strong. This strategic location allows Beartrail to fish the best spots of the upper part of the Naknek where large rainbow trout can be found feeding behind spawning salmon and crashing the migrating salmon smolt.  The Naknek River has a strong run of King salmon and one of the best spots on the river to get the Kings is within sight of the lodge!  The Naknek River has annual sockeye returns in the millions and has a very strong run of silver salmon. For almost the entire summer season, you can get your hooks into fresh fish.

The Fishing
 
There are numerous methods that are effective on the Naknek so it is possible to fly fish or use conventional gear. The type of fishing you do while at the lodge is your choice. Your guide will be there to help and educate you about the rivers, fish species and any method of fishing you prefer.

You have a 100% assurance that you will be able to fish every day of your trip. Location is an important factor when considering an Alaskan trip and Alaskan Bear Trail will have the answer for any weather situation that occurs.

The fishing is excellent on the home river along with many fly-out rivers just a short 10 – 25 minutes away.  Many times throughout the season, especially when targeting big rainbow Trout, the Naknek is the river of choice. Throughout the Bristol Bay / Lake Iliamna area there are other tremendous fishing opportunities. Bear Trail Lodge wants every guest to have the chance to see and experience what makes Alaska special. One benefit of choosing to visit the Alaska Sportsman’s Bear Trail Lodge, is that whether you decide to fly-out to fish a nearby stream or stay and experience the wonders that our home river offers, your fishing day will be filled with adventure and excitement. All fly-outs are included in the package price.

The fly-out program at the lodge focuses on the rivers and streams located in nearby Katmai National Park and Preserve.  Non-anadramous species of Rainbow Trout, Arctic Char, Dolly Varden and Arctic Grayling are all targeted. 
 
Season

Rainbow Trout:
June 8 through Oct 15
Average size is 24” – 26” fish on many rivers throughout the region.

Fall Rainbow:
September 1 through October 15
Trophy fishing for the largest rainbows in Alaska right in front of the lodge on the Naknek River.

King Salmon:
June 15 through July 31
Excellent fishing throughout the season for 25 – 30 pound fish on the Naknek

Sockeye Salmon:
June 28 through July 20 World’s largest salmon run passes right in front of the lodge.

Silver Salmon:
July 28 through September 25 Very exciting fish to catch; excellent combo with big rainbows.
 
Chum Salmon:
July 15 through August 20
Great fighting sport fish averaging 12 pounds; excellent for fly fishing.
 
Two-Handed Spey Casting:
The NakNek River is tailor made for spey casting with long runs of great stretches of fishable water. The best times to fish for rainbows on the NakNek with a Spey rod are June 8 through June 28 and again September 1 through October 15.

Alaska Beartrail Lodge

The Alaska Sportsman’s Bear Trail Lodge has a very comfortable and inviting cedar main lodge that is complete with a commercial kitchen, a large dining room, a relaxing living room, a spectacular sun room with decks overlooking the stunning views of the Naknek River and the mountains of Katmai National Park. Guest cabins are well appointed with comfortable beds, private bathrooms, individual heaters, and relaxing couches.  Of course, all of the rooms have very impressive views of the river.  The entire lodge is connected by a boardwalk which will lead you to a dramatic deck with a hot tub that is elevated 70 feet above the river. Get in and relax while reflecting on the adventures of the day.

    Travel Information for Alaska Sportsman's Bear Trail Lodge

    Fly into Anchorage.  A representative from the lodge will greet you at the airport and coordinate your flight to the lodge:

    Alaska is well served by a number of airlines including Alaska Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and Northwest Airlines. Flight times vary, but non stop flights to Anchorage run from over 3 hours from Seattle to over 5 hours from the Chicago or Minneapolis. For schedules please visit the individual airlines websites.

    Anchorage is often called the "air crossroads of the world" due to its strategic location between major population centers in North America, Europe and Asia. So we are accessible to fishermen world wide.

    Terms and Conditions/Cancellation and Refund Policies

    Once Castafly Travel, LLC receives a deposit or final payment for any type of trip, it is anacknowledgment and agreement by the client to all Terms and Conditions and Cancellation and Refund policies:

    Non-refundable deposits and payment.

    Your payment for a trip is non-refundable, regardless of the means for payment, be it credit card, cash or check.

    Deposits

    Unless otherwise noted by the vendor,
    • 50% of the total package price per angler/trip package is due to Castafly Travel, LLC within 14 days of initial booking. This deposit will secure all reservations.
    • The balance or full payment of package price per angler/trip package is due to Castafly Travel, LLC at least 90 days before first day of scheduled trip
    • Castafly Travel, LLC reseves the right to charge a service fee of $100 for any changes to the reservation after initial booking.
    • In the event of cancellation, deposits will be refunded ONLY if space can be rebooked.
     Cancellation and Refund Policy 

    Unless otherwised noted by the vendor,
    • All cancellations for any type of trip must be made in writing to Castafly Travel, LLC. Castafly Travel, LLC reserves the right to charge a service fee of $100 for any cancellations of any type of reservation.
    • Cancellation outside of 90 days prior to scheduled departure – 90% of deposit or payment refund or transfer of funds to another scheduled time or another angler.
    • Cancellation between 60 and 90 days prior to scheduled departure - 70% of deposit or payment refund or transfer of funds to another scheduled time or another angler.
    • Cancellation between 30 and 60 days prior to scheduled departure – 60% of deposit or payment refund or transfer of funds to another scheduled time or another angler.
    • Cancellation 30 days or less prior to scheduled departure – No refund of deposit or final payment.

    Trip cancellation insurance and evacuation insurance.

    Because your deposit and other payment is non-refundable, Castafly Travel, LLC suggests you consider trip and medical evacuation insurance. This insurance is the best way to avoid losing your deposit due to unanticipated circumstances or emergencies. Because Castafly Travel, LLC has no ability to control your deposit onceit is forwarded to the respective lodge, outfitter, etc., we have developed a relationship with Sportsman’s Travel Insurance.

    We also recommend trip evacuation/rescue insurance with Global Rescue, a medical and security evacuation service. We strongly urge to consider these types of insurance, be it with Sportsman’s Travel, Global Rescue, or some other trip and medical evacuation insurance company. A brochure for each company is included in your pre-trip planning package.

    Castafly Travel, LLC is merely an agent.

    Castafly Travel, LLC and its affiliated companies and agents act only as agents for contractors or owners and outfitters, hotels, airlines, shipowners, and charter air carriers providing means of transportation or other services. All tickets, vouchers and contracts of such hotels, airlines, outfitters, lodges, operators and owners are issued subject to any and all tariffs, terms and conditions under which such accommodations, means of transportation or other services are offered or provided, and the issuance and acceptance of any such tickets, vouchers and contracts shall be deemed to be consent to their further conditions.

    Castafly Travel, LLC and any of its affiliated or associated companies or agents shall not be or become liable or responsible in any way in connection with such hotels or lodges, means of transportation or other services, or for any loss, injury or damage to or in respect to any person or property however caused or arising out of your vacation booked through our company.

    Itinerary alterations.

    Castafly Travel reserves the right to make such alterations in the itinerary as it deems in its discretion, necessary or desirable, to refuse to accept or retain as a member of the party any person at any time (in such case refund will be based on the actual cost of the unfinished portion of tour) and to pass on to tour clients expenditures caused by delays or offense beyond our control.

    Cancellation.

    Castafly Travel, LLC reserves the right to cancel any tour prior to departure, in which case full refund will constitute full settlement to the client.

    Baggage and personal effects, including items purchased, are the sole responsibility of the owners at all times and no member or agent of Castafly Travel, LLC or its agents, affiliated or associated companies is authorized to accept these for storage, safekeeping, or transportation
